Responsibility & Civic Leaders

Between September 2003 and June 2004, IGE UK convened three consultations, supported by the Comino and Gordon Cook Foundations, looking at the drivers of responsibility in our society.

  • Drivers of Responsibility (September 2003)
  • Drivers of Responsibility (March 2004) Report available
  • Drivers of Responsibility (June 2004)

An observation was made at the consultation in June 2004 that civic mayors provide unique non-partisan leadership in their local communities.  Three subsequent consultations explored this concept with past and present London mayors, looking at the crucial function of the civic mayor in the challenging climate of present–day civil society, and the potential of the role to promote a climate of increased personal responsibility.

  • Personal Responsibility and Civic Leaders (March 2005)
  • The Role of the Civic Mayor in the 21st Century (June 2005)
  • The Role of the Civic Mayor in the 21st Century (July 2006)

The findings from the consultations were published, in partnership with the London Mayors’ Association, and annual induction training was introduced for new mayors.
