Impetus Awards 2002-2008

The Impetus Awards was a National programme working with hundreds of primary and secondary schools, colleges, youth centres and youth voluntary organisations across the UK. During its seven years, it inspired thousands of children and young people to carry out youth-led projects which explored and applied values and human rights issues.

Impetus recognised creative and innovative work which used ethical values and human rights to respond to contemporary and challenging issues in young people's local and/or global communities.  The projects were assessed against five Impetus criteria; exploration, innovation, team work, sharing and reflection. Each year two exemplary projects from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales were selected to represent their country at the annual UK Showcase Celebration.

“It is not often young men of this age and marginalized communities are rewarded for work in the field”

“In a time when children and young people are getting such negative media coverage, it was great to be able to celebrate their achievements and congratulate the teachers, support workers and youth workers who work so tirelessly on such a diverse set of projects.”

Keith Towler, Children’s Commissioner for Wales
